B & E Center For Career Development

Why should you consider pursuing a degree in business? How will you emerge in today’s competitive job market? Why is it important you prepare today for your career tomorrow? The College of Business and Economics offers several majors in business, including accounting, economics, finance, management, management information systems, and marketing. A major in any of these fields will offer endless opportunities for you as a WVU graduate. As a business major, you can pursue careers in the government, manufacturing, energy, banking institutions, advertising, higher education, professional accountancy, real estate and the highly lucrative field of information systems. In fact, with an average starting salary of nearly $49,000 in 2006-2007 and an anticipated 60% wage and salary increase from 2004 and 2014, MIS is one of the fastest growing industries in the economy.

The business arena is exciting and wide open with unlimited job choices and career opportunities which continue to increase at a steady pace. Statistics show by 2010, a third of mid-level management positions will be vacated due to retirement. Federal agencies are expected to hire nearly 193,000 new workers in almost every occupational field within the next two years. Half of the civilian work-force in the U.S. Government is eligible for retirement as of 2007.

The CSC offers an array of services beneficial to anyone interested in creating a sustainable career. The agency offers Orientation 151—Career Series, Career Planning and Exploration—designed to help freshmen and sophomore students who are uncertain about their career choice. The CSC Job Location and Development Office posts listings of available part-time jobs, seasonal work, summer jobs, and internships.

Whether you prefer working with a team or function better independently, there is a business path suitable for your unique personality and skill level.
