Gov. Joe Manchin III (B&E marketing 1970) recently traveled on a trade mission to China. His trip received extensive media coverage and attention on both sides of the globe.
The College of Business and Economics became involved in this mission because of its widespread network of Chinese alumni. Since 1994 the College has educated Chinese business and government leaders in Western business and American culture. Today, the Center has more than 200 alumni in China.
In late October, Drs. R. Stephen Sears, William Riley and Victor Chow went to Shanghai, China, to attend the annual banquet for alumni of our Center for Chinese Business. We were asked to coordinate the governor’s visit to Shanghai and had the honor of introducing him to the city’s mayor and many business and government officials at the alumni banquet.
With 1.3 billion people, China has one of the fastest growing economies in the world and an emerging middle class with tremendous purchasing power. No country can afford to overlook China’s present and future influence on the world’s economy. The governor’s trip to China demonstrates that West Virginia is not overlooking the opportunity.
