Study in China

The Center offers West Virginia University students and West Virginia business executives the opportunity to directly experience Chinese culture and business practices by traveling and studying in China. This is a unique study abroad opportunity partially funded by a grant from the Chinese alumni of the Center’s municipal government training programs such as Minsheng Bank in Beijing, Baoshan Steel Group, Shanghai Post in Shanghai, and the Municipal Finance Bureau in Tianjin.

West Virginia Businesses work with a team of WVU students and professors to conduct market research on China. The team evaluates a company’s potential for exporting and develops a market entry strategy. Students, faculty and company officials work closely together. Students gain from the hands-on experience of a real-life project, and companies benefit from having the expertise of WVU faculty and the Chinese alumni who provide guidance and introductions in China.

Participants spend two weeks on the campus of West Virginia University learning about the history, culture, language, and business environment in China and working in teams with their West Virginia company. They get to know company personnel, products, operating environment and export readiness. The team then travels to China for 15 days of classes, briefings, company visits, and introductions with their counterparts in China. After returning from China, students and faculty spend a week analyzing results and preparing recommendations for a final report to company officials.
