Why Study Economics?

The student of economics is taught to identify the costs and benefits of a decision, which are sometimes not obvious. Economics deals with some of today's burning issues: acid rain, support for the poor, international trade, unemployment, capital punishment, education, the budget deficit or surplus, the third world, and national defense among many others. The economist has the skills to identify the real consequences of decisions made in these areas. That skill is valued highly.
