Wawel Castle

As you emerge from the southern end of Krakow's Old Town, there before you is a hill overlooking the River Vistula.  At the top of this hill is the Wawel Castle and Cathedral.  This hill is the site of the earliest settlements, which date back as far as fifty thousand years.  This is where many of the kings of Poland lived.

Walking up the incline toward the Wawel entrance, the Cathedral looms overhead.   Wawel Cathedral.

The Cathedral, a hodgepodge of buildings, including chapels added by various kings over the ages.   The ceiling inside the Cathedral.

A colorful building on the Castle grounds.   A 19th century neo-Gothic structure on the Castle grounds.

I have no idea what these guys are all about.   Whatever it was, it wasn't official. The guy approaching them is about to kick them out.

The architectural details are fabulous.   I love the waterspouts.

More of the colorful Wawel hodgepodge.   Another architectural detail.

This is the tomb of Saint Stanislas, which dominates the interior of the Cathedral.  The tomb has stood at this site since the 13th century and it was here that many Polish Kings were crowned. The silver coffin is a 17th century addition.

Another view of the tomb of Saint Stanislas.

The tomb of King Wladyslaw Warenczyk, who ruled from 1434 to 1444. He was also king of Bohemia and Hungary and died at Varna (in present-day Bulgaria) crusading against the Turks. His death would lead to the passing of both the Bohemian and Hungarian crowns to then little-known Austrian princes -- the Hapsburgs.   The Polish Eagle, here incorporated into the design of one of the tombs.

The interior courtyard of the main building of Wawel Castle. Very Renaissance.   Very neo-classical.
