Bill Trumbull's Photo Gallery of the
Soviet Union
I took most of
these pictures during a month I spent in the Soviet Union in 1991. Just
months later, the Soviet Union was no more, replaced by fifteen
independent nations. I was there working with my colleague
Mikhail Ivanovich Popov of the Institute of Industrial Economics in
Donetsk, Ukraine, to edit papers on the regional aspects of
restructuring (perestroika) by Soviet scholars for a special issue of
the International Regional Science
Review. Some were taken in subsequent years on trips to
Ukraine from 1992 to 1994. Thus, I witnessed the end of
perestroika in the Soviet Union and the beginning of transition to
capitalism in Ukraine.
