Collapse and Renewal

Havana is disintegrating. Most of these scenes are of buildings along the Malecon, the road that runs the length of Havana along the sea wall. The Historian of the City, who is in charge of restoration, is just beginning to direct his attention to the Malecon (while continuing his work in the old city, Habana Vieja), but it is already too late for many of these former jewels.

Is this building just too far gone to save? I hope not.   This lovely building is not in too bad shape, I don't think.

Close up of building above right..   Many of the balconies have to be propped up like this.

These were once interior walls. This building is at the intersection of the Prado and the Malecon, two of Havana's most important streets. Location, location...   A mixture of restored and unrestored buildings along the Malecon. Some of the work is being done by foreign firms needing office space and some by the Historian of the City.

A sign hung on a restoration site.   This is the scene depicted in the sign. The cars are a little different.

There's lot's more.
