More Pictures of Havana

It just doesn't end!

El Morro

beach
El Morro guarding the entrance to Havana Harbor in the background with swimmers off the Malecon in the foreground.

This lovely beach is just a few minutes drive east of Havana. The open-air restaurant at the entrance serves great fish.

Cemetary 2

Cemetary
This cemetery rivals those of Paris.

Another view of the cemetery.

a quiet place to read

schoolkids
It's not hard to find a quiet place to read.

School kids. I thought they were pleased to have their picture taken, but one is giving me the finger!

street market

Partagas cigar factory
A colorful stall at a tourist market.

This is one of the famous cigar factories.

street dancing in Cojimar

Cuban flag
Dancing in the street in Cojimar, the village just east of Havana depicted by Hemingway in "The Old Man and the Sea."

The entrance to the Hotel Riviera on the Malecon.

U.S. Interests Section

The U.S. Interest Section. What we call our embassy when we can't call it an embassy because we don't recognize Cuba.

corner apartments

monument to victims of the Maine
This guy is proud of his apartment. How much would his corner unit go for in, say, Paris?

Remembering the victims of the Maine.

soccer game

loading canon
Playing street soccer.

Loading an eighteenth century canon to be fired at 9PM. They do this every night. It's a fun ceremony to watch.

cops

Santeria sacrifice
Cops are everywhere. They even patrol on the public beaches. And they don't like photographers.
A Santería sacrifice.

post box

skaters
A Cuban post box. Just slip your letter in his mouth.

In-line skating is very popular with kids in Havana.

Flowers in a neighborhood market.
These swans are part of the banister around the porch in front of the Bocoy rum factory in Cerro.

A little old but well cared for.
An agricultural market.

Statute of a Crazy Man
This statue of John Lennon sits on a park bench.  No one can accuse the Cubans of lacking a sense of humor. By the way, he is having a hard time keeping his glasses on. I don't know how many times he has lost them but it's been at least three or four. The last time I saw John, his glasses were missing.

This bronz is right in front of Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís on the Plaza de San Francisco in La Habana Vieja.  It depicts a local character who died not long ago, a tramp known by all as El Caballero de París.  It's that Cuban sense of humor again!
