Area of Expertise:
Dr. Hwang's research interest includes microeconomics, spatial economics,
and regional analysis. The research in microeconomics is to investigate the
pricing behavior of a monopolist under different demand and cost conditions.
It generalizes and examines both the stable and unstable solution under
conditions of decreasing demand and falling costs. As a result, the model
thus derived can be used as a more general theoretical basis for antitrust
enforcement. In spatial economics, the research is in market area analysis.
Spatial factors (distance) have a significant effect at the theoretical level
as well as on the interpretation of empirical data. On the basis of redefined
spatial market (e.g., coal markets), the distances and cross-boundary
movements will be minimized and the optimal flows among markets will
be assured.
