West Virginia University is hosting the 2009 Fraud and Forensic
Accounting Education Conference on July 9-11, 2009 in exciting Las Vegas,
Nevada
The conference will assist practitioners and academics in further developing their professional skills, and/or classroom techniques in the specialized field of forensic accounting, financial statement fraud, fraud risk assessment methodology and fraud examination.
The conference program will be a combination of sessions:
(1) presented by practicing professionals to help attendees further develop knowledge, skills and abilities and
(2) sessions presented by participants with regard to best practices, tips, tools and techniques.
The material and content is based on a National Institute of Justice Model Curriculum Project: “Education and Training in Fraud and Forensic Accounting: A Guide for Educational Institutions, Stakeholder Organizations, Faculty and Students.”
The conference is spring-boarding off the success of the Sept. 8, 2006, and May 10-12, 2007, Fraud & Forensic Accounting Education Conferences. Based on feedback, comments and suggestions from participants, the 2009 conference is designed around foundational skills development and best practices in the emerging field of fraud examination and forensic accounting.

Note: Dates for 2009 FAFI Conference precede the Institute for Fraud Prevention meeting (July 11-12) and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners Annual Meeting (July 12-17), both also held in Las Vegas. With one travel expense, you can attend multiple events!

Best Practices: Fraud Examination and Forensic Accounting:
During breakfast forum presentations, the conference program has been designed to allow participating professionals and academics to share their best practices with one another. Interested attendees should submit a 1-page document to FFAModel@mail.wvu.edu that outlines a proposed forum session. The outline submission should include the:
(a) session title
(b) a descriptive overview of the topics to be covered
(c) a listing of the session objectives
(d) who should attend and why
These submissions need to be received by end of the business day, Friday, April 10, 2009. Conference organizers will evaluate proposals and communicate with participants by Friday, April 24, 2009. Approximately 16 forum session submissions will be accepted for presentation in the participant breakfast forums.
Topics that will be considered include best practices in the field, including skills development in prevention, detection or deterrence of fraud and fraud and forensic accounting investigation techniques. Academic topics that will be considered include presentations that address multi-course program development, single course development ideas, in-class exercises, out-of class projects, cases and assignments, designing and running internship programs, case presentation tools and techniques, student placement, selling programs to administrators and designing programs for business professionals.
Post Conference Session: Data Extraction and Analysis (Data Mining): Hands-on, Interactive Training with Representatives from IDEA
Saturday afternoon, July 11 (1:00pm-5:30pm). Participants will load a classroom version of the software and data files onto their computer, learn actual hands-on tools and techniques that can be applied immediately to client data. Participants will also learn how to import PDF files directly into IDEA for testing and analysis. There is an additional registration fee of $100 for this post-conference hands-on session. Participants must register separately and bring a laptop computer that meets certain specification requirements. There are a limited number of available spaces for this session.
