Dreams Are Dollars in Idea Challenge:
Students with good ideas turned them into $50 in their pockets during the Idea Challenge in late February at the College of Business and Economics.
Part of the celebration of National Entrepreneurship Week, the competition was open to all WVU students with a great idea for a new product or service.
The rules were simple:
Students would give a two minute “pitch” of their ideas before a panel of judges, and interested students were required to reserve a time for their presentations. Thirty students took the challenge, and five $50 prizes were awarded on the spot.
“This competition is similar to an American Idol tryout,” said Mindy Walls, center director. “Besides being a celebration of Entrepreneurship Week, the Idea Challenge is a way to get students thinking about next year’s Business Plan Competition."
The center was established at the College of Business and Economics in 2001 to educate students and encourage them to become entrepreneurs. Since then it has sponsored a business plan competition that each year awards $10,000 and business perks to a team with the best plan. This year a total of 10 teams are competing in two categories for $20,000. Winners will be announced on April 14 when they present their final plans.
The Idea Challenge is sponsored by the WVU Entrepreneurship Center and West Virginia Vision Shared.
