Kaiser Best Doctoral Student Award

Description:

The award is given to at most one Ph.D. student each year in September.

Eligibility:

Any full-time economics Ph.D. student at WVU nominated by: (i) a faculty member in economics or (ii) a fellow graduate student in economics. Previous winners of this award are not eligible.

Deadline:

Nominations (no specific format required) must be in the possession of the graduate coordinator by September 15.

Criteria:

Decisions are made by the Graduate Studies Committee, based on the material provided in the nomination and the overall record as it stands on September 15.

Award:

$2,000 from the Kaiser endowment.

Vickers Doctoral Student Research Paper Award

Description:

The award is given to at most one Ph.D. student each year in September. The award is based on one economics paper written at any time during the student's stay in the economics graduate program at WVU.

Eligibility:

Any full-time economics Ph.D. student at WVU. Previous winners of this award are not eligible.

Criteria:

The Graduate Studies Committee makes its decision based on a paper submitted by the graduate student. Only one paper may be submitted per graduate student in any given year. Preference will normally be given to single-authored papers. In addition to the quality of the paper, the Committee considers also the stage of the program that the student is in.

Deadline:

Completed submissions must be in the possession of the graduate coordinator by September 15.

Award:

$1,500 from the Vickers endowment.

Vickers Doctoral Student Teaching Award

Description:

The award is given to at most one Ph.D. student each year in September. The award is based on documented teaching accomplishments at WVU during the student's stay in the economics graduate program at WVU.

Eligibility:

Any full-time economics Ph.D. student at WVU who has taught at least one course at WVU with full responsibility. Previous winners of this award are not eligible.

Criteria:

Decisions are made by the Graduate Studies Committee based on teaching evaluations and any other evidence of teaching effectiveness submitted by the graduate student. All teaching evaluations obtained during the student's stay as an economics graduate student at WVU must be submitted.

Deadline:

Completed submissions must be in the possession of the graduate coordinator by September 15.

Award:

$1,500 from the Vickers endowment.

Jon Vilasuso Advanced Doctoral Student Award

Description:

The award is given to at most two Ph.D. students each year in September.

Eligibility:

Any full-time economics Ph.D. student at WVU who applies. Previous winners of this award are not eligible.

Deadline:

Applications (no specific format required) must be in the possession of the graduate coordinator by September 15.

Criteria:

Decisions are made by the Graduate Studies Committee, based solely on the candidate's (i) likelihood of finishing the dissertation by May, (ii) demonstrated potential of outstanding research ability, and (iii) standing as an active member in department functions and as a good colleague to fellow students and faculty.

Award:

$1,000 from the Jon Vilasuso Fund.

Jon Vilasuso Doctoral Student Publication Award

Description:

The award is given to each qualifying Ph.D. student.

Eligibility:

Any full-time economics Ph.D. student at WVU in or before their fifth year of studies. Previous winners of this award are not eligible.

Deadline:

Provide copy of the acceptance letter to the graduate coordinator by May 1.

Criteria:

Receipt of an acceptance letter for a paper on which the grad student is a (co)author from a journal with a rigorous peer review process. Judgment on whether the accepted paper has passed a sufficiently rigorous review process lies with the Graduate Studies Committee.

Award:

$500 from the Jon Vilasuso Fund
